Lilies are classified into several categories. A horticultural classification arranges the
various types of lilies into broad groups which further classified by flower
shape. The hybrids are including
asiatic, martagon, candidum, american, longiflorum, trumpet, aurelian, oriental,
and interdivisional. There are also wild
lilies species, occur in North America, Europe
and Asia.
From the wild lilies, breeders created their magnificent
hybrids as mentioned above. Wild lilies
species often possess a delicate charm appealing to many people. Many of the species are favorite for garden
plants. These wild lilies especially
found in Japan, China, Burma and India.
The asiatic hybrids have the broadest color range of
lilies. Most of them are unscented
lilies. Martagon hybrids have whorled
leaves and many little turkscap blossoms, with colors such as yellow, lavender, pink, deep
dark red, white and light orange. Candidum
hybrids derived most from European lilies species, includes very few entries
which make them hardly found commercially.
The american hybrids derived from North American wild lilies
species, bloom in late June or early July in some locations, and in late May to
mid-June in other places. Longiflorum
hybrids are generally white trumpets.
Trumpet lily hybrids are easy to grow especially the
Aurelian type. They come in many colored
blooms such as white, gold, yellow, pink, with some having backs of purple, brown
or iridescent green. As the season progresses, trumpet lily hybrids gradually
blend into Aurelians, both of them are classified in the same division. They are also easily grown from seed.
The oriental hybrids are exotic group of lilies which not
very easy to grow. The old Rubrum lily
of this division is reasonably dependable while the broad leaved variety of the
Gold Band Lily is more vigorous.
There are interspecific hybrids obtained through
methodologies of new technology. LA
hybrids made from longiflorum and asiatic hybrids. OT hybrids ar the result of crossing oriental
lilies with trumpet or aurelian lilies.
OA hybrids involve crossing oriental with asiatic lilies. AA hybrids derived from crossing asiatics and
aurelian trumpets. LO hybrids are a
cross between easter lily and oriental hybrids.
