Calla lily bulbs are among the reasons why florists are happily busy with their shops. Customers are especially fond for their centerpiece. Even weddings, thanksgiving and other occasions are not spared from the flower's grace. Why not, when the flowers, variant in colors, are wide, deep, and resembling a trumpet! A native of the South African, the calla lily bulbs can grow up to 2 feet tall.

One stem of its flower sells between $5 and $9 at a shop, making calla lilies among the favorite cut-flowers in North America. Although considered as a spring bulb, the calla lily bulbs can be planted anytime of the year, and they thrive in almost all climate zones all year around.

This flowers require a place where they can enjoy a good amount of sunlight, especially in the afternoon. In some instances, they thrive even when the temperature soars higher than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

And while they need water to quench their thirst, they prefer soil that has good water drainage. Allowing them to soak in water for a long time will actually damage their roots. The best thing to do is to ensure that the area does not hold puddles longer than 4 hours after the rain has stopped. Nevertheless, when it does, the wise thing to do is to find another area. Or, amending the soil will be a great alternative.

Peat moss, compost, earthworm castings, manure, and ground bark are among the excellent organic soil amendments.

In planting the calla lily bulbs, setting a foot apart from each other is the best, while the depth must not be deeper than 6 inches. If the calla lilies are cultivated in pots, the bulbs should be planted shallowly, ensuring that the tops of the tubers are exposed.

Also, make it certain that the eyes of the bulbs are facing upward when they are planted into the soil. After covering the bulbs with soil, follow it with water. This will make the roots to sprout quickly.
