Executive Summary about How to Grow Tulips by Cindy Bidar

You might think you have to have a large yard to properly grow a festive tulip display. The truth is, some tulip varieties grow very well in small pots, and are nicely suited to provide just a splash of color on an apartment balcony or in a window box.

As with most flowers, tulips require a lot of sun. Choose a south facing window or balcony for the best sun exposure.

Keep in mind when choosing containers for growing tulips, terra cotta or ceramic planters are preferable. Plastic pots can overheat, and their lack of porosity can prevent proper drainage.

Make sure your soil is well drained and nutrient rich. If you're not sure, mix in some peat or compost, and a few handfuls of sand. Since full pots look better than barren ones, you'll probably want to plant more bulbs in a smaller amount of soil than normal.

Speaking, the taller the plant, the deeper the bulb should be planted. So if you wish to have a very tall Darwin hybrid, for example, you should choose a very large planter. For a window box, you should choose a smaller tulip variety, such as a Kaufmanniana Hybrid, which typically will grow to a height of four to ten inches.

Depending on the variety of tulip you've chosen, it will bloom sometime between late winter and early summer. Once the flower is wilted, you should cut off the stem of the plant. The plant needs to remain well watered and in the sun so the leaves can do their work.
