Orchids are one of the largest flowering plant families, since there are over 25,000 different kinds and yet still more to be discovered. Sometimes the Orchids are thought to be tropical flowers, but fortunately they grow naturally anywhere, in any climate. One of the world's most evolved flowers, the Orchid is an insanely beautiful flower. The most popular orchids are the Phalaenopsis, Cymbidium and Dendrobium. The highly productive variety of orchids is the Vanilla Orchid (and its bean).

Orchids can interpret many different kinds of messages, but back in history the meanings of orchids was of wealth, love and beauty.

Fertility
In the times of the ancient Greeks, Orchids symbolized masculine characteristics viewed positively. They believed that the Orchid could determine the sex of the unborn baby. If the mother ate a small orchid tuber, than the baby would be a girl. But if the father ate a large orchid tuber, than a baby boy will be born.

Luxury
It has been believed that Orchids carry healing and protective properties against diseases.

After the growth in popularity, in the Victorian England, the Orchid became a sign of luxury. Anyone during this period that could afford to buy the Orchid, it was a rich person.

Other Believes
The Aztecs ought to believe that if they drink a mixture of Vanilla Orchid and Chocolate it would give them strength and power, on the other hand Chinese believed that orchids can help with the cure of lungs illness and coughs.

In these modern times, the Orchids convey a meaning of delicate beauty and are symbolic of rare. Orchids, along with the peace lily are the most common and popular houseplants. The orchids have the tendency to impress the receiver of this plant, due to their charm and delight. Peony plants have many variety, that is why they have different bloom times in the spring. 

The peonies bloom season begins the later part of April to early June in California.  If the planting conducted in summer areas or in hot spring, midseason varieties would be the best varieties to grow.  If the temperatures are too hot, the late season varieties may not open well.

Peonies are easy to grow plant, blooming early in the season.  The plant can continue to bloom for several years.  Planting peonies should be in September or October.  Planting in the spring may result the flower will not bloom for one or two years.  Peony plant can grow well in partial shade, even though they prefer sun.

Depending on the species and location, peonies bloom in late spring through early summer for one week.  Planting early-, mid- and late-season varieties would extend flowering for six to eight weeks.  On a northern exposure, peony plants will bloom more.

Peony flowers come in many colors.  There are pink, rose, scarlet, purple, yellow, white, coral, crimson and cream colored peonies.  The flower shape including single, double, semi-double, anemone and Japanese.

Peonies come in two types, they are herbaceous or garden peonies, and tree peonies.  Peony flowers are large and beautiful.  Herbaceous peonies are best cut in the fall.  Tree peonies better not be cut unless the stem is diseased.

Peony diseases may come from fungi.  Removing leaf litter around peony plants would be great idea.  A fungus on dead leaves, roots and stems causes Botrytis blight.  This fungi can make buds blacken and softening the stems and buds.  Other disease, Phytophthora blight, strikes also in cool, wet weather and cause stems to dry up and the plant can be rotten.  Leaf spot is a symptom of disease produced by various fungi.  Mozaic virus causes yellowish patches and rings on peony foliage.

Bougainvillea Pruning Is Easy

Bougainvillea plant is a climbing flowering shrub with beautiful flowers and evergreen leaves which need to be pruned periodically to keep it always looking beautiful.  Pruning also keep the plant healthy.

Pruning bougainvillea is best to do in late winter or early spring, right after it flowers.  The beginning of the rainy season also a good time to prune bougainvillea.  It would be wise to avoid pruning bougainvillea plant in late summer or early fall.  This would result in fewer flowers of the plant in the following winter.

When pruning, it is better to wear gloves, since the plant is a thorn-covered vine.  Choose only gloves made of thick material.  Before using the pruning shears, wipe it with disinfectant to prevent the spread of disease to the plant.

Pruning may begin with cutting the dead or diseased parts of bougainvillea.  After that, don’t forget to wipe the pruning shears again with the disinfectant before pruning the healthy bougainvillea branches.  Continue pruning until it shaped as desired.  The pruning process might need to repeat throughout the growing season.  This will promote new blooms.

Between the regular prunings, pinching off the tops of the blooms might also needed once they have faded.  This can be done with your fingers or with shears.  Pruning off dead blooms more often will result in the more new blooms the plant will produce.

Bougainvillea are hardy plant, variety of shapes can be formed when pruning bougainvillea.  For example, cutting away low-lying branches would make the vine look like a tree.  Or perhaps you want to try to make bougainvillea bonsai, which can be obtained if you prune the plant to keep it short enough and trim branches regularly.

Don’t forget to fertilize the plant after removing plenty of branches.  This will replenish the beautiful bougainvillea plant.
